A green-horn is an inexperienced person, somebody who is  unacquainted with local customs. If you are interested in ranches, knowing the terminology can be quite helpful when you read new information about the subject. Here is a list to help acquaint you with ranches and animals in the cattle family, horses, sheep and cows. Definitions are provided by the Webster's Dictionary.

HORSES

Colt - a young male horse less than 5 years old.

Draft Horse - a large, strong work horses that pull heavy loads.

Filly - a young female horse less than 4 years old.

Foal - a young animal of the horse family, under 1 year old.

Gelding - a castrated or neutered male horse.

Mare - a fully mature female horse of breeding age.

Stallion - an adult male horse of breeding age.

Yearling - a horse that has reached 1 years of age, but is not yet 2.

CATTLE

Bovine-of,relating to, or resembling a cow or ox.

Bull - male in the bovine (cattle)family, especially an ox.

Calf - young male or female in the domestic cow family

Cow - a mature female of the cattle family that has born a calf.

Dry Cow - cow not giving milk between births

Fresh Cow - a cow  that has born a calf and is now giving milk

Heifer - young cow who has not had  a calf.

Herd - a number of animals of one kind kept together.

SHEEP

Ewe- a mature, female sheep.

Flock - a group of sheep kept together.

Lamb - a male or female sheep less than one year  of age.

Ram - a mature male sheep.
